Decoding Emissions: GHG Calculator for Textile Waste Recycling

Partners: IDH

The textile recycling industry faces significant challenges in understanding its environmental impact due to material complexity, diverse regional practices, and a lack of standardised measurement tools. Without precise insights into GHG emissions, it becomes difficult to prioritise actions that drive sustainability and align with global decarbonisation goals. To address this, a first-of-its-kind GHG emissions calculation tool has been developed, tailored specifically for the Indian textile recycling context. The tool bridges critical data gaps, offering reliable insights into pre- and post-consumer emissions across supply chains. It enables stakeholders to compare scenarios such as virgin versus recycled production, providing a clear understanding of the environmental benefits of recycling.

This tool goes beyond calculation by identifying high-emission “hot spots” and empowering stakeholders to adopt eco-friendly practices. By addressing the complexities of material diversity and regional variability, it facilitates informed decision-making and promotes a shift toward a circular textile economy. The tool’s scenario modelling and capability to assess emissions across the supply chain offer the industry an opportunity to implement targeted interventions and drive meaningful progress in reducing its environmental footprint. This masterclass will explore the importance of decoding emissions, the tool’s development, and its potential to transform textile recycling.

Weaving the Future: Digital Threads in the Circular Textile Economy

Partners: Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, Krefeld & Mönchengladbach, Germany

In an era where sustainability is no longer optional, the textile industry stands at a critical  juncture. The linear “take-make-waste” model that has dominated the textile industry for centuries is rapidly becoming obsolete. A circular textiles economy, where products are consistently made, used, collected, and reintroduced into the supply chain as raw materials, is not just an idealistic vision—it’s an imperative for our industry’s survival. Achieving this circular future requires more than good intentions. It demands a complete overhaul of our systems, from design to disposal, and this is where digital technologies come into play. Artificial Intelligence, automation, and digital product passports are the essential tools that will enable us to close the loop in textile production.
